My first “run-in” with Dewey Beach seemed random enough; I was enjoying my summer job bartending in Ocean City, MD when I overheard someone talking about going to see Otis Day and the Knights performing live. Otis? My man? A chance to see the coolest band from the coolest movie ever made? I had to break into this conversation and see if this once in a lifetime opportunity was true…

 The guys told me the real Otis and his band were indeed playing live just up coastal highway in a town called Dewey Beach at a place called the Bottle & Cork. Having never heard of Dewey Beach before I asked exactly where it was located. I’ve coming to Ocean City since I was little, so I though I knew the eastern shore pretty well. In fact, Dad had loaded us all in the Ford Ranch Wagon for a day trip to that cute little miniature boardwalk in Rehobeth Beach one day so he could get some of that famous Grotto Pizza.

My two new friends said that we must have driven right through Dewey Beach on the way there and back. Hmmm, I don’t remember any beach towns between OC & Rehobeth…I remember that big Sea Colony development, but there weren’t any bars, restaurants or other businesses there. I told them that I did remember a broken down liquor store and some cheap looking hotels north of Sea Colony, but before Rehobeth Beach. “That’s it”, they said, “That is the Bottle & Cork!” They went on to tell me that there were no open container laws and that you can build a fire and have a party on the beach!

Well, now I had to experience this magical place for myself. So I convinced my buddy Aylmer and a few co-workers to road-trip up the coast. For 3 days straight I had the kitchen and bar staff singing Shamalama Ding-Dong in anticipation of our journey. Assuming any appearance by these giants would be sold out Aylmer and I drove up 3 hours early to get tickets. Looking at us strangely, the bar staff (cleaning up from the previous night’s party), said they didn’t ‘do’ tickets and just took our $5 and stamped our hands. They then suggested we pick up a few king cans and go to beach while they cleaned up (they promised we would be able to get back in for the show later). We walked into the liquor store (also called the Bottle & Cork back then) and asked what a ‘king’ can was then ordered a couple. 32 ounce can of beer? Works for me!

Several ‘kings’ later, my co-workers met up with us and we saw the greatest show of my young life; it was as if I was at the Dexter Lake Club with the Deltas and the Dickinson girls myself. Otis and the boys were spot-on and the audience knew exactly what to say between songs (“Otis, my man”, “He loves us!”).

After the show we bought some more beers and drank them on the beach. We took a dip and sang Otis tunes under the stars before the long drive home to OC at sunrise. What a perfect night I thought to myself, I hope I get back up here again sometime.

University Times Interviews Dr. Carrie Leana, Director of the Center for Health and Care WorkThe Center for Health and Care Work (CHCW) has as its primary aim the development and dissemination of research addressing the unique opportunities and challenges of professionals who provide healthcare and other forms of direct care to others. This is a large and growing workforce in the United States, encompassing jobs that cut across income and education levels, ranging from personal attendants and childcare workers to nurses and physicians. Enhancing the quality, size, and stability of this workforce touches on many of the central economic and social issues of our time, ranging=2 0from off-shoring to immigration, national competitiveness to shared prosperity and reducing the ranks of the working poor.
Seven of the ten fastest growing occupations in the United States are health and/or care professions. Due in part to growing demand, there are persistent difficulties recruiting direct care workers across a variety of occupational categories (e.g., nurses; home health workers; childcare workers; some physician specialties). The problems of job vacancies are compounded by high turnover in many direct care professions, with dramatic and negative consequences for consumers of these services, the workers themselves, the organizations that employ them, and society as a whole. There continue to be numerous public-and private-sector initiatives to retain direct care professionals, and growing interest in this workforce from federal and state agencies which provide significant funding streams for these services.
Research at the CHCW is focused on addressing questions such as:
How will changes in the demand and delivery of healthcare services affect the quality of care provided?
How can we more effectively address the problems of low-wage, low-skill workers in direct care?
How do public policy initiatives regarding immigration affect opportunities in the direct care workforce?
How can we develop and retain professionals who form the basis of a dynamic and competitive economy?
